As STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Nears Its End, Mary Wiseman Reflects on Tilly's Journey

As Star Trek: Discovery draws closer to its grand finale, Mary Wiseman, who portrays Sylvia Tilly, opens up about her character's evolution and the challenges she faces in the show's final season. In an interview with TV Insider, Wiseman delves into the complexities of Tilly's role both as a teacher at Starfleet Academy and as a crucial member of the Discovery crew on their quest to secure a cosmic power.

This season, Tilly's decision to teach, initially riddled with self-doubt, is put to the test during an away mission that underscores her aptitude for leadership and crisis management.  Wiseman explains, "Being able to problem solve on your feet is definitely an important quality in someone on a starship. I also think that maybe a sort of protective mode brings a certain side of Tilly out that is highly competent."

This statement highlights how Tilly's past experiences on the Discovery have equipped her with unique skills that enhance her teaching methods. The dynamic between Tilly and her former roommate, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), remains a core element of the series. Wiseman recalls the joy of filming with Martin-Green, describing their time together as filled with both professional and personal growth.

"It was so peaceful and fun to be with Sonequa. We had a blast. It’s been a while since we had a big away mission together," she said. The bond between the characters translates into a deeper understanding and cooperation, vital as they navigate their mission's challenges.

Throughout the season, each mission teaches Tilly more about herself, particularly her ability to listen and support the younger generation. "I think Tilly learned how to really listen to younger folks and hear what they’re telling you and let them lead and be a supportive hand on the shoulder," Wiseman said.

This reflects a significant growth in her character from earlier seasons, where she often appeared more self-conscious and insecure.

Despite some of her cadets considering other opportunities, Tilly remains steadfast in her educational goals. Wiseman reassures fans that Tilly's journey is far from over, expressing her character's determination to return to the academy once her mission aboard the Discovery concludes.

Wiseman's portrayal of Tilly has been transformative for both the actress and her audience. Reflecting on her time with the character, Wiseman comments, "I will remember Tilly as a life-changing character and a person who I learned so much with."

This sentiment is echoed in her anticipation of the series finale, which she believes provides closure while leaving room for future narratives within the expansive Star Trek universe.
