JUNE 16, 2020 - Star Trek: Picard producer Akiva Goldman has given a new interview in which he hints at some of what could be to come in future seasons of the show.

Goldsman spoke to IndieWire yesterday about season one of Picard, including breaking down some of his thoughts on how the season played out, and how things might be different in season two. IndieWire said that Goldsman hinted that the writing process was hurried for season one, but that the COVID-19 lockdown actually gave the writers more time to perfect the scripts. That’s consistent with an interview he gave earlier this year, in which he described wanting to “refine your setups once you’ve written the payoffs”.

And what kinds of stories might those scripts include? Goldsman wasn’t specific, but he did say that we can expect to see more of Starfleet, which barely featured in Picard’s first season. “Especially as we go forward,” he said, “we’re going to start making statements about really what the world of Starfleet, at least technologically if not socially and culturally...These are the things that are likely to get a little bit more play than they did [in Season 1] in what was essentially a story about somebody who is outside of Starfleet.”

Goldsman also hinted that there could still be room for more appearances by Brent Spiner in the series, although he didn’t specify any sort of time frame. “I think you always want another Soong,” Goldsman said. He was referring, of course, to Spiner’s human character in Picard, Altan Inigo Soong, who was another son of Data’s father, Noonien Soong. “We all knew this Soong character had been in our head canon when it came to the [first] season anyway,” he said. “But we want more Brent, and we wanted to create a platform for which there could be more Brent in future seasons.”

And of course, if you’d like to catch up on what Brent Spiner got up to in season one of Star Trek: Picard, you can do so on CBS All Access.
