CBS All Access releases trailer for upcoming animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks

Ensign Mariner and Ensign Boimler in Star Trek: Lower Decks

Star Trek: Lower Decks - the new animated series premiering next month - has a new, full-length official trailer. CBS All Access dropped the trailer, along with new series key art, yesterday morning.

The two-minute and fifteen second-long trailer is filled with plenty of looks at what to expect in the upcoming series. There’s plenty of action, plenty of laughs, and (fair warning for fans planning to share the series with their kids) a little bit of nudity. The trailer opens with a serious-sounding Captain’s Log, which we soon find out is actually Ensign Boimler pretending to do a Captain’s Log. He’s discovered by Ensign Mariner, who, of course, makes fun of him. The trailer reinforces what we already know about these characters: while they may be stuck in the lower decks, and while they do have their share of conflicts, they do have ambitions for more.

The trailer also gives us a look at the bridge crew, and sets us up neatly for the class divide on the ship: while the bridge crew slap each other on the back and talk of grabbing a beer after work, Ensign Mariner gets to work on “holodeck waste removal”.

In the press release announcing the trailer, CBS All Access reiterated that Star Trek: Lower Decks will be a half-hour animated series that will run for 10 weeks starting Thursday, August 6th, exclusively on CBS All Access. Canada’s CTV also recently confirmed that the series will be available on its CTV Sci-Fi Channel.

Star Trek: Lower Decks stars Tawny Newsome as Ensign Mariner, Jack Quaid as Ensign Boimler, Noël Wells as Ensign Tendi, and Eugene Cordero as Ensign Rutherford. As Ensign Mariner says in the trailer, they’re “not really elite,” they’re more like the “cool scrappy underdogs”.
