SEPTEMBER 8, 2022 - During the “56-Year Mission” Star Trek convention in Las Vegas, Kate Mulgrew delighted fans with a solo appearance in which she shared many fond memories of her time as Captain Katherine Janeway of the starship U.S.S. Voyager on Star Trek: Voyager.

She shared the highs and lows of her role and some insights that fans may not have been totally aware of:

The producers of VOY had asked early on if she would like her character to play an instrument, but she declined.

While she was saying goodbye to Tuvok in the final episode as he was succumbing to the Vulcan equivalent of Alzheimer’s disease, her mother in real life was dealing with the same disease.

She often asked the producer to allow her character to deal with her feminine side, not just being the captain in charge of 156 crew members on her ship.

She genuinely felt that the cast members had become an extension of her family and it was hard to ‘say goodbye’ to them.

Her last week on the set was spent by herself, filming the final pick up shits and as soon as it wrapped, and the captain’s chair immediately being disassembled as she stepped away from it for the last time.

She then went on to tell of how she liked working on Star Trek: Prodigy, stating that it was a truly collaborative process, saying,

I was offered [creative control] before I even went into negotiations. That is exactly what Alex Kurtzman said. ‘This will be deeply collaborative from the first moment, you could teach us.’ And that’s exactly the way it’s been. But let me say right here, Kevin and Dan Hageman are geniuses, the creators and the writers of Star Trek: Prodigy. So, it’s nothing but a joy. Every time I am in the booth—which feels like once every two or three weeks—that is what it feels like. It’s so liberating creatively. It’s so much fun. I often walk out and I just feel great. It’s very, very different. And it’s so wonderful to be with them. So yes, it’s collaborative.

She then went on to tease that the idea of Star Trek: Janeway has come up. And while there are no solid plans for this to happen, she also said that it’s not off of the table either. Telling the crowd there, and by extension, all of us, that it’s as much up to us as it is to her.

Do I hear pencils sharpening for a letter campaign?
