REVIEW: Picard's Academy #5

I’ve been reviewing Picard’s Academy for a couple months now and I thoroughly enjoy it. The comic is sweet and heartwarming while still managing to keep a suspenseful plot. It includes many references to TNG but does not require the reader to have ever seen TNG to enjoy the comic.

Issue 5 is no different. It is a bit more serious than the other issues as the crew is in serious danger. Despite the high stakes, it does still manage to keep its heartwarming undertones. We see the crew arguing and fracturing under some stress but despite the tension they do manage to work together.

This issue also has some of my favorite jokes and references. We see the character Doq say “It’s possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness That is life.” Picard says that exact thing to Data in season two of TNG and now we know where we got it. The comic also ends with Picard saying the first half of “engage,” his signature catch phrase. This issue also has my favorite joke in the whole series so far. Since it’s a kids’ comic I do not think they can swear. However the writers got around it with this clever string of dialogue:

  “--it”

“You can say that again.”

“Sh–”

“It was a figure of speech Nir.”

I think I probably found this to be significantly funnier than it is but it's so clever that I absolutely had to include it.

Overall, issue 5 of Picard’s Academy is amazing and meets the high standard the rest of the series has set. I definitely recommend both issue 5 and the whole series.
