Star Trek: Lower Decks co-executive producer Chris Kula signs overall deal with CBS Studios

CBS Television Studios; Chris Kula

APRIL 29, 2021 - In case you missed it: CBS has rewarded the work of another Star Trek producer by extending an overall production deal. Last week, Deadline reported exclusively that Chris Kula, co-executive producer on Star Trek: Lower Decks, has signed a deal with CBS Studios.

The announcement comes just a few months after another Lower Decks producer inked a similar deal. Back in December, Variety reported that Mike McMahan, the series creator and showrunner, signed a two-year exclusive production deal, also with CBS Studios. Since then, Lower Decks has earned itself an early third-season renewal, even as the second series has yet to premiere. Deadline did not give any details about Kula’s deal.

Outside of Star Trek: Lower Decks, Kula is an alum of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, he’s been a staff writer on shows like Community and MADtv, and has developed and sold pilots for TBS, VH1, Turner Sports and Disney XD. He’s also a producer on the HBO Max animated series Close Enough and the TBS comedy series Wrecked.

To catch up on the first season of Star Trek: Lower Decks, you can catch it streaming now on Paramount+.
