Tawny Newsome (Ensign Beckett Mariner) records for Star Trek: Lower Decks

JUNE 8, 2021 - While fans of Star Trek: Lower Decks anxiously await the premiere of season two in August, good news came this week as we learned that the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos is already hard at work on season three. On June 6th, actor Tawny Newsome shared an Instagram selfie from a recording studio with the caption, “🖖🏾SEASON THREE🖖🏾#StarTrekLowerDecks,” confirming that voice sessions for the third year of animated adventures of Ensign Beckett Mariner and her crewmates are already underway.

As noted on TrekMovie.com, the fact that the sessions are taking place at a studio is a good sign that production is returning to normal, as recordings for season two took place remotely due to COVID-19. Co-star Jack Quaid, who voices Ensign Brad Boimler, replied to Newsome’s photo with celebratory emojis, but no word yet whether or not they’ll have an opportunity to record scenes together as they did for season one. Quaid is currently in Toronto shooting Amazon’s superhero series The Boys with fellow Trek universe alum Karl Urban.

TrekCore contributor Alex Perry noted on Twitter Monday that “There are approximately 70 episodes of #StarTrek at some stage of being worked on right now...and that’s just the stuff we definitely know about!” Today may not be a good day to die (unless you’re a Klingon) but it is definitely a good day to be a Star Trek fan.

Season two of Star Trek: Lower Decks premieres August 12th on Paramount+, where you can currently stream all of season one.
