Wil Wheaton's wife Anne recounts his "massive, full-body seizure" that put him in the hospital earlier this year
NOVEMBER 7, 2021 - Wil Wheaton has been a busy man in recent months, hosting The Ready Room in the midst of four (soon to be five) new Star Trek series on Paramount+, as well as co-hosting the Star Trek Day celebration in September. His ability to bring high-level fan energy to his hosting duties is impressive, especially in light of new revelations of a major health scare he experienced at the beginning of August, a scary occurrence detailed last week on his wife Anne’s website.
In her account, Anne describes the events of August 5th as a “nightmare” that “will be burned in my memory forever.” It began with Wil experiencing excruciating pain that seemed to subside for a moment, but when he went back to their bedroom it turned into a “massive, full-body seizure.” While waiting for paramedics to arrive, Anne describes with heartbreaking vulnerability what was going through her mind at the time: “My only thought was if you were about to die, it wasn’t going to be alone on our bed, it was going to be in my arms.”
The flurry of activity with a call to 911, the arrival of paramedics, and the journey to E.R. by ambulance is only the beginning as she also shares the reality of hospital procedures during COVID-19, the observant help of a kind hospital employee, the unfolding drama of multiple tests, and the sleepless night that followed.
Thankfully, doctors were able to pinpoint the cause of the seizure: a combination of a rapid-onset migraine, a pinched nerve, and one of Wil’s prescription medications. But even in the relief of knowing it wasn’t something more serious, Anne goes on to share reflections on processing crisis and trauma that are well worth the read.
