FEBRUARY 1, 2021 - The women of Star Trek are doing their parts for public health. Over the past week, Kate Mulgrew, Marina Sirtis and Gates McFadden have all shared that they received a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Mulgrew went first, on Monday, January 25th. The Star Trek: Voyager star, soon to be appearing in Star Trek: Prodigy, tweeted: “Got my Covid-19 vaccine in the wee hours of Monday morning! Consider this an order from your Captain - continue to mask up & register to receive your vaccine ASAP. [...] We will beat this, but only if we all work together. Stay safe, my friends, and trust in science!”

Mulgrew was followed by Sirtis, who recently announced that she will be leaving the United States for the U.K. in March. At the time, she said she would try and get vaccinated before she leaves, and she has! Sirtis had her first dose on Tuesday, January 26th, and she said her second is scheduled for February 16th. With a picture of her going for the first dose, she tweeted, “Got my shot today. FREEDOM!”

Finally, McFadden posted early in the morning on Sunday, January 31st, that she too, got the jab. She said on Twitter, “Beautiful morning!! Just got my Covid 19 Vaccination just now. look forward to the second dose in 3 weeks!! Happy Sunday and hoping you get yours soon”.

All three women faced criticism from some Twitter users who seemed to perceive that they had gotten special treatment due to their Hollywood status. But all three women qualify for vaccination because of their ages: Mulgrew and Sirtis are both 65 years old, and McFadden is 71. In both New York (where Mulgrew was vaccinated) and California (where Sirtis and McFadden were vaccinated), adults aged 65 and over are currently eligible to receive the vaccine. They all followed on from Sir Patrick Stewart, who is 80, and who received the vaccine last Monday.
