DECEMBER 14, 2020 - David Cronenberg fans rejoice! The famed director-turned-Star Trek: Discovery actor will be back for season four.

A piece in Variety exclusively revealed the news on Friday. They said, “Variety can exclusively report that along with appearing in more episodes in Season 3 of Discovery, Cronenberg will return for Season 4.”

Cronenberg first made a Star Trek-shaped splash in the Discovery season three episode “Die Trying”, where he played opposite Michelle Yeoh as Emperor Georgiou. “He is an interrogator who’s also kind of an academic historian,” Cronenberg said of his character, Kovich. “He plays his cards pretty close to his vest, as does the Emperor. And as he tries to pry open some secrets from her, she actually is doing the same to him.”

His role grew this week when he returned in “Terra Firma Part 1”, and according to that Variety report, it looks like he’ll be sticking around a while longer. But how did a director of Cronenberg’s caliber even end up as an actor in Star Trek? Cronenberg said it was because, “I’m cheap and I’m available.” Cronenberg lives in Toronto, where Discovery is filmed, something he jokingly cited as his “main qualification” for the role. Cronenberg is no stranger to acting, however, having made his start acting in underground films in the 1980s. While known mainly for directing films such as Videodrome (1983), The Fly (1986) and Crash (1996), he boasts 37 acting credits across a breadth of genres over the past four decades.

For this particular role, however, it came down to who you know. “I just got a note through people that I know, casting people,” Cronenberg said, “saying that [Executive Producer] Alex Kurtzman was really thinking of having me do a spot on the show. I said, of course, I’d be absolutely delighted.”
