1980s sci-fi documentary In Search of Tomorrow will feature Star Trek films, is raising funds on Kickstarter

There’s a new crowdsourced documentary on the horizon, one that will please fans of both Star Trek and Star Wars…along with every other 1980s sci-fi fan. Targeted for release in July of 2021, In Search of Tomorrow from production company CreatorVC promises to be “the definitive 80s sci-fi documentary”, giving viewers an in-depth look at the science fiction films from the decade, including four films from a little franchise called Star Trek.

CreatorVC, the organization responsible for the recent 80’s horror documentary, In Search of Darkness, is looking to tackle sci-fi movies this time around. Which is going to mean plenty of Star Trek content. Fans saw the release of four Star Trek films during the 1980s: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The One With the Whales and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Those four films hold their own well against the plethora of other iconic sci-fi films to be featured in the documentary, including ET, Back to the Future, RoboCop, Ghostbusters and many more!

TrekMovie.com spoke with In Search of Tomorrow director David Weiner about the influence of Star Trek on the documentary. “Star Trek is an undisputed cornerstone of ‘80s sci-fi,” Weiner said. “I am excited to sit down with the likes of Nicholas Meyer, Walter Koenig, Adam Nimoy, Wil Wheaton, and so many other relevant artists and Treksperts to discuss the important impact of the franchise on cinema”. As it turns out, Weiner is a lifelong fan of Star Trek, saying “It will be a thrill to get brand-new and untold perspectives from the icons who shepherded it, along with their personal takes on the sci-fi genre as a whole. For the needs of the many, our human adventure with In Search of Tomorrow is just beginning”.

In Search of Tomorrow is currently raising money on Kickstarter for its production. Backers for the film have pledged more than $270,000 so far, well in excess of the original goal, which was just shy of $40,000. If you would like to back the project, you still have the time to do so. Pledges start at $38, with each backer at that level receiving a digital copy of the film, their name in the credits, an invitation to the virtual premiere and access to exclusive online content. That includes guest Q&A sessions, access to the production team, watch parties, and early previews. Of course, those who wish to give more can do so with increasing backer rewards the more you pledge, all the way up to several thousand dollars for an executive producer credit, tickets to the Hollywood premier, and more.
