AUGUST 16, 2023 – As you are no doubt aware, season two of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ended last week. So while you’re wandering around the house on Thursdays, looking out the windows and wondering what life is all about, if you’re a comic fan, there’s some good news to help fill the gap until season three.

A new SNW comic is arriving next week from IDW, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Scorpius Run. TrekCentral has the the story, including an interview with variant cover artist, Sean Von Gorman. In the five-issue run, Captain Pike and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise to the Scorpius constellation. As they venture into the unknown, the Enterprise crew learn what it truly means to traverse through the strange and unfamiliar when they lose contact with Starfleet and find themselves trapped in unexplored space.

Mike Johnson and Ryan Parrott penned the story, along with story consultant Kirsten Beyer. Angel Hernandez provides the art. There will be several variant covers, and one of those, the one by Von Gorman, is a tribute to George Pérez’s cover for the first issue of DC Comics’ Star Trek title from 1983.

Gorman said of his tribute cover, “I’ve always loved that cover…. When I send over cover concepts, I’ll usually send one that fits with the assignment I’ve been tasked to do. And then I will throw in a fun one that I think would sell. This idea was one I had pitched that was originally passed on. But I had a strong feeling that this would be something.”

When asked how he would tease the story in The Scorpius Run, Gorman said, “This series was pitched to me as The Cannonball Run in space with the Enterprise.”

Well, they’ve done a musical, so why not?

The first issue of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Scorpius Run arrives next Wednesday, August 23. In the meantime, head over to TrekCentral for more on the new title and from cover artist Sean Von Gorman, including images of Gorman’s process and details on his signing events.
