Jonathan Frakes - everyone’s favorite space dad - has given a new interview in which he turns his attention toward Star Trek: Discovery season 3.

Frakes is fresh off the high of Star Trek: Picard, where he directed a couple episodes, and appeared in a couple episodes. But now that Picard is finished, and season two looks a long way off, Frakes is now focusing on the next series on the docket (we hope): Star Trek: Discovery.

Frakes, who has now had his hand in either acting in or directing a whopping five Star Trek series, directs three episodes of Discovery’s upcoming third season. He spoke to Comicbook.com about what fans can expect from the latest (and so far, farthest-in-the-future) installment of the franchise. It sounds like the emphasis will continue to be on Michael Burnham, as played by Sonequa Martin-Green. But the feel of the plot will be different.

“Michael Burnham has found a new core, not to mention a new partner in crime,” he said. “There’s a big tonal shift on that show, driven less by the pain and guilt of her past and more about the magical reunification of the Discovery crew and wherever she went off to.”

Frakes also gave some hints as to what fans might see in the plot of the new season. “God knows where she went as the Red Angel,” he said. “So those two things coming back together is very much the theme, and how grateful everyone is and what’s next. It’s got a lot of action-adventure and not so much pain.”
