DECEMBER 6, 2022 - Season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery releases on Blu-ray and DVD today and Daily Star Trek News has partnered with Paramount Home Entertainment to bring you a prize giveaway. Two lucky winners will receive Blu-ray copies of the season, delivered right to their door. Details on how to enter are below, but first, let’s take a look at the Blu-ray set itself.

Star Trek: Discovery Season Four on Blu-Ray

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 includes 4 discs containing all 13 episodes of the season, in a beautiful high-definition transfer. The plot revolves around Captain Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew facing a dire threat to Federation and non-Federation worlds unlike any the galaxy has seen before. The set includes over 90 minutes of special features, including:

  • A variety of deleted scenes.

  • Audio commentary on the season’s final episode, “Coming Home,” with executive producer and episode writer Michelle Paradise, episode director Olatunde Osunsami, Martin-Green, and David Ajala (Cleveland Booker).

  • The requisite gag reel, full of line flubs, sliding door mishaps, and tomfoolery.

  • “The Toll It Took”: a fascinating documentary on the logistics of filming during a pandemic. It may sound a bit dry, but for a behind-the-scenes junkie like me, it was one of the highlights of the set.

  • “Being Michael Burnham”: Sonequa Martin-Green is front-and-center in this one, discussing her journey through the season, and dealing with her parents’ deaths in the middle of filming.

  • “Creating Space”: in Star Trek: The Original Series the planets consisted of sets with foam rocks and a cyclorama backdrop lit by different colors, depending on what planet the crew was on. By the time DISCO began filming its first season, green screen had been in wide use for years, but the process of replacing the screen in post-production with whatever the actors were meant to be seeing was expensive and limiting. In season 4, the DISCO crew adopted a new way to put the actors in impressive environments. The AR (Augmented Reality) wall, nicknamed “the holodeck” by the show’s personnel, is an impressive piece of technology that costs less and is more versatile than green screen effects. This 20-minute documentary takes a deep dive into the holodeck, explaining exactly what it is and how it benefited the production.

  • Star Trek: Discovery: The Voyage of Season 4: cast and crew interviews shed light on the story concept for season 4 and its execution.
