DECEMBER 1, 2023 - In a recent episode of NPR's "Enlighten Me," host Scott Detrow introduced a poignant conversation between Rachel Martin and the esteemed actor Sir Patrick Stewart. This segment delved into how Stewart's iconic role in Star Trek: The Next Generation and his personal journey have impacted fans and himself alike.

Stewart, known for his portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, shared profound insights about the show's influence.

"Its impact on so many people has been extraordinary, ranging from people saying that it became their education to others who said, ‘I was going to end my life, but I couldn't because I wouldn't be able to see Star Trek anymore,’" Stewart recounted, underscoring the profound emotional connection viewers have with the series.

Discussing his early career and his first job as an Assistant Stage Manager, Stewart read a passage from his new memoir Making It So, describing the deep connection he felt with the stage.

"I stood beneath this light every night, taking a moment to breathe in the auditorium and the vibrations of the audience that had just left it," he read, highlighting his lifelong passion for his craft.

When asked about the spiritual and quasi-religious reverence fans hold for Star Trek, Stewart acknowledged this unique aspect.

He said, "It was about truth and fairness and honesty and respect for others... So, yes, in a sense, we were ministers."

He described the gratification he and his co-stars felt, knowing their work was more than entertainment; it was changing lives. Stewart also shared his philosophical musings on life and mortality.

"I don't know what happens, but I have a very, very deep and acute feeling that there is more than this life that we lead," he said, discussing his views on the afterlife and the broader mysteries of existence.

The actor's reflections offer a glimpse into the depth and complexity behind one of television's most beloved characters. His words, coupled with Martin's thoughtful interviewing, provide a stirring look at how art can deeply affect both the audience and the artist. Stewart's ongoing journey of self-discovery and contemplation adds another layer to his already impressive legacy.
