JANUARY 20, 2022 - Star Trek: Discovery has been on the forefront of LGBTQ representation from the beginning, with its portrayal of the relationship between Dr. Hugh Culber, played by Wilson Cruz, and Paul Stamets, played by Anthony Rapp. As a result, Discovery is being recognized again for these efforts with another nomination from the GLAAD Media Awards.

According to TrekMovieDiscovery stands to warp away with another Outstanding Drama Series award, which it did for the first time last year. This makes the fourth nomination for the series, the first of which was in 2018, according to Wikipedia. This year, Discovery is competing with 9-1-1: Lone Star (FOX) Batwoman (The CW), The Chi (Showtime), Doom Patrol (HBO Max), Good Trouble (Freeform), Grey's Anatomy (ABC), The L Word: Generation Q (Showtime), Pose (FX), and Supergirl (The CW).

Wilson Cruz tweeted out his thanks to GLAAD for recognizing the show’s “fierce commitment to showing the true and beautiful diversity of our #lgbtq community.” Discovery has most recently introduced and developed the trans and nonbinary characters of Gray and Adira, played by Ian Alexander and Blu del Barrio, who are themselves transgender and nonbinary, respectively.

GLAAD was founded in 1985 as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation in response to media coverage of HIV and AIDS. The organization has been handing out Media Awards since 1990 (for the 1989 season) to honor media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues.

The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will be held April 2 in Los Angeles and May 6 in New York.
