Since Star Trek: The Motion Picture was released in December of 1979, theatrical films have been a part of Star Trek. The most recent film, released in 2016, was Star Trek Beyond, which took place in an alternate dimension from any of the other TV shows or movies. Dubbed the “Kelvin timeline,” Beyond and the two previous films gave Captain Kirk and the rest of The Original Series characters a new origin story.

What will Star Trek 4 be about?
It was announced at the Paramount Investors Day Presentation on February 15 2022 that the next film in the franchise, currently known as Star Trek 4, will involve the Kelvin timeline cast. Plot details are, as yet, unknown.
How many Star Trek films have there been?
There have been 13 films. Six of them feature the TOS cast, four feature the TNG cast, and three take place in the Kelvin timeline, with a fourth, Star Trek 4, on the way.
