MAY 23, 2021 - It’s been over two years since fans of Star Trek: Discovery saw Ash Tyler, played by Shazad Latif, put in command of the clandestine agency Section 31. Now, in a new interview, Latif indicated fans will have to be a bit more patient to find out if Tyler’s promotion will pay off with a part in a planned Star Trek spin-off to be headed by Michelle Yeoh’s Philippa Georgiou.

Speaking to the website Digital Spy, Latif brought up the Section 31 series and says he’s heard “slight rumblings” concerning the spin-off, which was first announced by CBS in January of 2019.

"It's just been slight yeses, slight questions, but I've no idea,” he shared, adding, “I think it's down to people's schedules.”

Latif’s uncertainty echoes what has been an unclear rollout for the Section 31 series. The timeline for a potential sixth addition to the Paramount+ slate of Star Trek series has always seemed in flux, even though previous stories revealed that Discovery veterans Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt would serve as showrunners, and also that a writer’s room was already hard at work on scripts.

In February, Paramount+ programming chief Julie McNamara remarked that it was unlikely for a new series to debut until one of the five current Trek iterations “runs its course,” but did not rule out a sixth series if the timing feels right. In other words, it seems that Guardian of Forever’s (aka Carl’s) newspaper was correct when it proclaimed a “bumpy” forecast for Emperor Georgiou’s future.

Latif, however, is not sitting around waiting for a phone call from the Star Trek Universe. He’s hard at work promoting his new BBC series, The Pursuit of Love, coming to Amazon Prime in the States in the near future. You can read more about that project at bbc.co.uk.
