We’re going to see an evolution in the relationship between Lt. Stamets and Dr. Culber in season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery. At least that’s what the actors behind those roles, Anthony Rapp and Wilson Cruz, told Showbiz Cheat Sheet at PaleyFest New York earlier this month.

When we left the pair at the end of season 2, they were heading for reconciliation, after a season in which the two were largely apart, after we saw Culber come back from the dead and try to cope with his new reality. Now that they are headed into the distant future, what does the future hold for their relationship?

Rapp said that from Stamets’ point of view, “I don’t think there’s any hesitancy. Once he’s back he’s back,” he said. Cruz echoed a similar sentiment talking about Culber. “Culber is coming to [Stamets] as a newly realized person strengthened in many ways and more willing to assert himself than he was before his bitter demise.” Cruz does acknowledge, however, “It creates a different dynamic in the relationship.”

Fans of “Culmets” as the shipped pair are frequently called, will be pleased to hear that they can expect to see more of the men at home. “These are two equals,” Cruz said, “who have come together and are trying to find a way forward in this new future. And so I think we see them much more in domestic bliss than we had in the past.”

Naturally, with a return to normal for the two, also comes growth. Rapp says that there will be a new character next season, with whom he will have a sort of mentor relationship. And Cruz said that Culber will be taking on additional responsibilities as a medical officer. He said, “He’s really taking on some responsibility for people’s mental health and getting them through the difficulties of being in a new future and in a strange place.”

Star Trek: Discovery season 3 is currently in production and expected to air sometime in late 2020.
