JANUARY 6, 2023 - Star Trek fans also appreciate the science fiction that preceded their favorite franchise, such as those classic nuclear-age monster movies. One of those films is getting a reboot with a Star Trek veteran at the helm.

Deadline is reporting that Michael Giacchino is set to direct a reimagining of the 1954 giant ant movie Them! Giacchino is known to Trek fans, of course, as the award-winning composer for Star Trek (2009), Star Trek: Into Darkness, and Star Trek: Beyond. He also directed the Star Trek: Short Treks episode, “Ephraim and Dot.”

While Giacchino has other directing credits, Them! will be his feature film debut. He said about the project, which he will also score, “There’s always a movie in your mind that never leaves your head. For me, that’s Them! It wasn’t until much later in life until I learned what it was about — the nuclear age.... What I love about Them! is exactly what it’s called: Them! It’s about the other, the unknown which one refuses or can’t understand. The current version of Them! is about immigration, and to tell a story about the subject through a lens of this insane science fiction monster movie.”

Giacchino’s brother, Anthony, will also work on the film.
