“The Girl Who Made the Stars” / “Ephraim and DOT” - Star Trek Short Treks

The newest Star Trek Short Treks, “The Girl Who Made the Stars” and “Ephraim and DOT” are out today on CBS All Access. And yesterday, the streaming service released trailers for each, to whet your Star Trek Short Treks appetite.

First up, in “The Girl Who Made the Stars”, Michael Burnham’s father tells his daughter a story about “one thousand centuries ago” and how “one girl made the stars”. He continues, “When the dark came, and made the people afraid, they gave their fear a name: The Night Beast.” From the official loglines for the short, we can expect “a mythical story about a brave little girl who faced her own fears head on.” This story is written by Brandon Schultz and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, who previously directed the Michael Chabon-penned Short Treks episode, “Calypso”.

Then “Ephraim and DOT”. Ephraim the tardigrade makes an unlikely friendship with a robot aboard the Enterprise. This one looks like it will be a “Greatest Hits” sort of episode, as Ephraim clearly plays witness to classic Star Trek adventures like “The Tholian Web”, “The Doomsday Machine” and “The Trouble with Tribbles”. Interesting to note, too that her adventures must take place over some time; while we see the original Constitution-class Enterprise at the start of the trailer, the ship at the end is either the refit or the A version from Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek IV: The One with the Whales, respectively. This Short Treks episode was written by Chris Silvestri and Anthony Maranville, and directed by Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino. This is Giacchino’s directorial debut for Star Trek, and only his second project as a director, after 2018’s short “Monster Challenge”.

Both Short Treks, “The Girl Who Made the Stars” and “Ephraim and DOT” will be available to stream exclusively on CBS All Access, later today.
