Star Trek Short Treks “Ask Not” end credits scene shows clips from upcoming animated shorts

Teeny, tiny spoiler alert: at the end of this week’s Star Trek Short Treks episode, there’s an end credits scene that gives a first look at what we can expect from animated Star Trek.
At the end of “Ask Not”, a scene that’s little more than a teaser shows a few clips from the two Short Treks episodes out on December 12th. TrekMovie.com published some screenshots, as well as some background on the two stories.
First up: “The Girl Who Made the Stars”. In the clips, we see a girl in a field holding some kind of light, then a closeup of her face, a shooting star reflected in her eyes, and finally, her walking into some sort of cave. The animation style is 3D, and cartoonish in proportions. TrekMovie notes that we might be seeing the story that Michael Burnham told in the Discovery season two premiere episode “Brother”: “A thousand centuries ago in Africa, the /Xam Abathwa tribe gathered to share a story. The tale of a girl who dug her hands in the wood ash and threw it into the sky to create the Milky Way. And hidden there, a secret buried among the eternal stars, was a message. An enormous letter in a bottle made of space and time, visible only to those whose hearts were open enough to receive it.”
Then it’s “Ephraim and DOT”. As TrekMovie notes, the tardigrade from Discovery season one was originally intended to be a part of the crew, and was to be named Ephraim. DOT is a reference to the repair bots we saw in the finale of Discovery season two. The animation style for this story is flat, rather than 3D, and features cute cartoonish versions of both tardigrade and robot. Not much action here, although there is a giggling tardigrade, which is as wonderful as it sounds.
Voiceover for the clips says “Coming December 12th, two Short Treks, from a whole new universe.” “The Girl Who Made the Stars” and “Ephraim and DOT” are the first new animated Star Trek content since The Animated Series went off the air in 1974.
Once again, the Star Trek Short Treks “The Girl Who Made the Stars” and “Ephraim and DOT” will be available on December 12th. They are followed by the last of this year’s Short Treks, the Star Trek: Picard prequel short, “The Children of Mars”, on January 9th.
