Star Trek: Picard’s Evan Evagora, aka Elnor, aka “Space Legolas”, knows his character has a certain resemblance to an ethereal race of humanoids from The Lord of the Rings.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Evagora revealed that the choice for his character to be a bit on the Elvish side was a deliberate one. “We, or at least I,” he said, “had some thoughts like ‘Is [my character] maybe a little too close to what some fans have seen in other things - in other franchises like Lord of the Rings’?”

Evagora went on to explain that he talked through the issue with series showrunner Michael Chabon, executive producer Alex Kurtzman, series star Sir Patrick Stewart, and the other writers on the show. It brought Evagora’s thinking around. “I quickly realized,” he said, “we are giving audiences something similar but different, this almost moody teenager. Something that feels new to Star Trek, for sure.”

Later in the interview, Evagora related his favorite story of working with Stewart on set. Evagora has previously said that he was “terrified” meeting Stewart for the first time, and he clearly still retains a certain amount of reverence for the seasoned actor. “There was a day when I was sitting across from Alison Pill and Patrick filming a scene,” he said. “And those two together - I was watching them and forgetting that I was even being filmed. I just sat there, like I was an audience member, watching them. Just enjoying it.”

You can see Elnor in action in all his Elvish glory - minus the sequins - in Star Trek: Picard, along with Stewart and Pill, now streaming on CBS All Access.
