JANUARY 31, 2022 - Star Trek fans have their opinions about Star Trek: The Motion Picture, but it is difficult not to appreciate the visuals. As we reported last July, the director’s cut of The Motion Picture is being remastered in 4K Ultra HD, with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos sound. And StarTrek.com is keeping us up to date on the latest developments, adding even more pictures to their behind-the-scenes gallery of the restoration project in progress.

David C. Fein, the producer of the original director’s cut and of the remastered edition, says, “The final stage involved perfecting the color and look of the film. The Director’s Edition itself is the completion of the film with intended visual effects, fine editing to enrich and smooth the pacing, and a new powerful ATMOS sound mix…. For the first time ever, the film's received a scene-by-scene dynamic HDR color grading that is visually satisfying, engaging, and fully pushes HDR to a level of spectacle that is nothing short of stunning… [Pun intended!].”

In total, the series of eighteen images (so far!) shows us some of the individuals working on the restoration at their workstations, as well as some of the tantalizing results. As we await the release of the remastered director’s cut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, head over to StarTrek.com to see the behind-the-scenes images for yourself. (And don’t miss the link to a brief clip from that space dock scene….)
